A fixture in the Midwest underground, Black Metal Nomads BURIAL OATH have been crafting occult incantations since 2015. Through their extensive catalog of releases and relentless touring, BURIAL OATH has become one of the first breakthrough Black Metal bands from the region. The Whips, Chains, and Wildfires Tour is the next road campaign in line for the Ohio four-piece, featuring extensive dates with WITCHTRAP, WRAITH, and THE BLACK MORIAH, this 20-market package is shaping up to be one of the strongest tours of the year. With the fires of their latest release, 2024’s The Cycles of Suffering (Redefining Darkness Records), still burning bright, the band aim to introduce both new material and sonically expanded older material on the upcoming dates.
The band lineup consists of JV, whose projects include tours with CLOAK and UADA; Mor Grish; D, who did session work for OSI AND THE JUPITER; and B. The band and its members have participated in a number of notable performances, including Blood of the Wolf Fest 2019 (BURIAL OATH), as direct support for ROTTING CHRIST‘s US/Canada Tour 2023 (UADA), Milwaukee Metal Fest 2024 (CLOAK), and a 2024 European tour that included Brutal Assault, Party San Metal Open Air, and ZappenDuster (CLOAK).
Since the band’s inception in 2015, BURIAL OATH has issued two EPs and three full-length records. 2016 saw the band’s self-titled EP injecting new blood into the Midwest’s Black Metal canon, followed up by their debut full-length, Beyond the Vale of Shadowlands, released through Vendetta Records, in 2017. The momentum continued in 2017 with a follow-up EP, entitled Black Altar Invocations. Subjugation of the Bastard Son would serve as the band’s sophomore effort in 2018 before a period of seance and witchery, which would last all the way until 2024’s The Cycles of Suffering, released through Redefining Darkness Records. The Cycles of Suffering is a seven-song ritual of 31 undiluted minutes of modern Black Metal, bearing scars of Heavy and melodic Death Metal upon its flesh. D.S’ riff crafting brings a funereal and somber tonality to tracks such as ‘Void Hunter’ and ‘Howling Promethean Winds,’ while the artillery percussion of JV provides an unwavering forward momentum to tracks such as ‘Deathbringer’ and ‘Kingdom of Fire,’ the bestial howl of Mor Grish casting a black pall over each individual incantation. Decibel Magazine premiered the video for ‘Pagan Fires,’ stating “BURIAL OATH are going to bring us catchy, blackened, groovy metal and we can’t wait to hear more.”
No Clean Singing, commenting on the band’s debut, called the record “sulfurous and savage [with a] ferocity more than matched by the appeal of its dark melodies and the dynamism of its rhythms and energies.” Cvlt Nation referred to the album as “one of the most compelling and thought-provoking black metal albums of the year.”
Having toured extensively in 2024 and 2025, the Whips, Chains, and Wildfires campaign cements BURIAL OATH as one of the hardest working bands in the current music scene. True nomads whose live show Rustbelt Rock Review called a “rare combination of ritual imagery [that] is truly a performance worth seeing.”
